The Short Answer
A king bed looks ideal with 7 to 9 pillows for a fully styled look. But the right number depends on your style preference and how much time you want to spend making the bed each morning.
Here's the range:
- Minimalist: 4–5 pillows
- Classic: 7 pillows
- Full-styled: 8–9 pillows
Any of these looks intentional as long as you follow the layering logic. More pillows isn't automatically better — the key is using the right sizes in the right order.

Three Styling Levels
Minimalist: 4–5 Pillows
For people who want a clean look without spending five minutes on pillow placement every morning.
| Layer | Quantity | Size |
|---|---|---|
| Sleeping pillows | 2 | King (20×36) |
| Euro shams | 2 | 26×26 |
| Accent or lumbar | 0–1 | 22×22 or 14×22 |
Stand the king sleeping pillows against the headboard. Place the two Euro shams in front. Optionally add one accent pillow or lumbar centered in front. Done.
Classic: 7 Pillows
The most popular arrangement — enough depth to look styled without being fussy.
| Layer | Quantity | Size |
|---|---|---|
| Sleeping pillows | 2 | King (20×36) |
| Euro shams | 3 | 26×26 |
| Accent pillows | 2 | 20×20 or 22×22 |
The three Euro shams span the full width of the king bed. Two accent pillows in front, evenly spaced, add the personality layer.
Full-Styled: 8–9 Pillows
The designer look — layered, textured, and photograph-ready.
| Layer | Quantity | Size |
|---|---|---|
| Sleeping pillows | 2 | King (20×36) |
| Euro shams | 3 | 26×26 |
| Accent pillows | 2–3 | 20×20 or 22×22 |
| Lumbar | 1 | 14×22 |
This adds a lumbar pillow centered at the very front. The lumbar anchors the whole arrangement and gives the eye a natural resting point. If you go with 3 accent pillows, place the middle one slightly forward.
Sizing Chart for King Beds
| Pillow Type | Cover Size | Insert Size | Quantity Needed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Euro sham | 26×26 | 28×28 | 3 |
| Accent | 20×20 or 22×22 | 22×22 or 24×24 | 2–3 |
| Lumbar | 14×22 | 16×24 | 1 |
Why 3 Euro shams? A king bed is 76 inches wide. Two 26-inch Euro shams only cover 52 inches, leaving visible gaps. Three fill the width properly.
For a California king (72×84), the same counts work — the extra length doesn't change the pillow arrangement since pillows stack front-to-back, not side-to-side.
Arrangement Rules
- Back to front, large to small. Sleeping pillows against the headboard, then Euros, then accents, then lumbar.
- Stand Euros upright. They should lean against the sleeping pillows, not lay flat.
- Center the lumbar. It sits on the bed surface in front of everything else.
- Alternate textures between layers. If your Euros are smooth cotton, make your accents a different material — linen, velvet, or boucle.
- Keep sleeping pillows in matching cases. They're the background — they shouldn't compete with the decorative layers.
Common Mistakes
| Mistake | Fix |
|---|---|
| Only 2 Euro shams on a king | Use 3 to fill the width |
| All pillows the same size | Use at least 3 sizes: Euro, accent, lumbar |
| Laying Euro shams flat | Stand them upright for height and depth |
| Too many patterns | Limit pattern to 1 layer — usually the accents |
| Sleeping pillows in decorative shams | Keep sleeping pillows in plain cases in back |
